No Injuries or Damage Reported in the city
New York City experienced minor tremors on June 5, 2024, consequently of an earthquake felt across the East Coast. The New York city Emergency Management department confirmed that while some residents may have felt shaking, there were no reports of injuries or damage within the city.
Understanding the Magnitude
Xan Davidson, an analyst with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), clarified that the earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 3.0, is not considered a significant event. “We would not expect there to be a lot of damage,” Davidson stated. “It would just be shaking.” Earthquakes are relatively uncommon on the East Coast, making even minor tremors noteworthy for residents.
A Look Back at a Stronger Quake
This event brings to mind a more considerable earthquake that impacted the region in April 2024. A rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, shook buildings from Philadelphia all the way to Connecticut and Westchester, New york. Officials at the time described it as one of the largest earthquakes to hit the East Coast in the last century.
“Earthquakes do happen here, but it’s not something that happens frequently,” davidson commented, referencing the April event. The widespread reporting of Saturday’s tremors, extending as far as Connecticut, is not unusual for earthquakes in this region, and according to Davidson, there was little cause for concern.
