Las Vegas, NV – A tragic shooting that unfolded Tuesday at a Las Vegas office building has claimed the lives of at least three individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer who was working a corporate security detail. The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, 45, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a violent rampage that began in the building’s lobby and extended to the 33rd floor.
A Hero’s Sacrifice
The fallen officer, 36-year-old Islam, was an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served with the New York City Police Department for three and a half years. His body was honored with the NYPD flag as it was transported from the hospital, with fellow officers standing at attention.
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said a somber official at a press conference, his voice thick with emotion. “He died as he lived: a hero.”
The Day’s Events Unfold
Surveillance footage captured the chilling moments leading up to the violence. Tamura was seen exiting a BMW, rifle in hand, and calmly walking across a plaza before entering the building. The structure houses offices for various companies, including the prominent investment firm Blackstone.
Once inside, Tamura unleashed a barrage of gunfire in the lobby, fatally striking Officer Islam and injuring a woman who attempted to seek cover. He then proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a guard at a security desk and another man in the lobby.
“He appeared to have first walked past the officer and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds,” an observer recounted in a TV interview, describing the shocking sequence of events.
Tamura then ascended to the 33rd floor, where the company that owns the building, Rudin Management, maintains its offices. There, he killed one person before taking his own life.
Victims Identified
Among the victims was Wesley LePatner, a real estate executive with Blackstone, the company confirmed.
