Pennsylvania is seeing increased investment in its energy infrastructure, with Gridmatic Retail expanding its operations and significant progress being made on grid interconnection projects. These developments come as New York state advances its “Spring Mobilization” initiative, aiming to bolster its energy grid as well.

Gridmatic Expands AI-Powered Energy Services to Pennsylvania

Gridmatic, an AI-first power company, announced on February 3, 2026, the expansion of Gridmatic Retail into Pennsylvania. The company will offer both standard and advanced retail energy contracts to commercial customers, including those with flexible energy loads. This expansion builds upon Gridmatic’s existing presence in the PJM Interconnection, the largest wholesale electricity market in the United States, where it already serves customers in Ohio.

According to a press release, Gridmatic’s AI-driven technology focuses on optimizing load and procurement, helping large energy users adapt to market fluctuations and a changing grid. The company aims to reduce costs and minimize risk for its customers by aligning real-time consumption with wholesale market prices. Gridmatic’s services are designed for a diverse range of commercial energy users, including data centers, manufacturers, and medium- to large-sized businesses.

Infrastructure Projects Advance in New York and Upstate New York

In New York, the Public Service Commission (PSC) approved critically needed infrastructure projects in June 2025, representing a major step in modernizing and expanding the state’s electrical system. These projects are intended to accelerate New York’s progress towards its decarbonization goals. The approvals were made under the Commission’s proactive planning process for upgraded electric grid infrastructure.

National Grid is also undertaking a substantial investment in Upstate New York’s energy delivery system. The “Upstate Upgrade,” announced in March 2024, involves a planned investment of over $4 billion to deliver a smarter, stronger, and cleaner energy grid. The initiative encompasses more than 70 projects scheduled for completion by 2030, aiming to generate thousands of jobs and over $1 billion in economic growth while enhancing grid resilience and supporting the state’s climate goals.

The Upstate Upgrade focuses on reinforcing and upgrading infrastructure, such as transmission lines and substations, to improve resilience against extreme weather events like blizzards and severe windstorms. This is expected to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages.

Pennsylvania Governor Pushes for Faster Grid Interconnection

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has been actively working to expedite the interconnection of new energy generators within the state. He specifically highlighted the Crane Clean Energy Center, which is now expected to connect to the grid a year earlier than initially anticipated. Governor Shapiro has stated his support for an “all-of-the-above” energy approach.

Gas Pipeline Project Gains Approvals

A controversial $1 billion gas pipeline project has received approvals from New Jersey and New York, with Pennsylvania also approving project permits, including a compressor station in Lancaster County. Williams, the company behind the project, has targeted construction to begin soon.
