newcastle boss Eddie Howe insists “football is played on the pitch – not with the money” before Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.
The game features two teams consistently challenging in both the Premier League and in european competition. Ahead of the match at St James’ Park, Aston Villa sits third in the table, while Newcastle aims too secure a European spot.
Both clubs are navigating the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), but Howe maintains that on-field performance should determine league standings, not financial power.
When asked if the Premier League is becoming more open or if larger wage bills guarantee success, Howe said, “I’m never a believer that finances should and can dictate the league table, even tho everyone will tell me that the teams with the highest wage bills will ultimately finish in the high league positions.”
