Newton Middle School Mourns Loss of Student Barbara Zheng
Newton, MA – The Newton Public Schools community is reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of Brown Middle School student Barbara Zheng. Superintendent anna Nolin announced Zheng’s passing in a statement released Tuesday, expressing the district’s profound sadness.
“Earlier today, we learned of the tragic and unexpected death of Barbara Zheng, a student at Brown Middle School,” Nolin wrote. “Our entire district is deeply saddened and have been in communication with the Zheng family, who have requested that their privacy be respected during this extremely difficult time.”
Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller echoed the superintendent’s sentiments, offering condolences too the Zheng family and the Brown Middle School community.
“My thoughts are with the Zheng family and with those who knew and loved Barbara,” Fuller said in an email. “The ache from the death of a young person is so deep… As we navigate these difficult days, I hope that we can lean on each other with care, gentleness and support.”
Recognizing the impact of such a loss on students, Nolin emphasized the availability of guidance counselors to provide support and resources.
“I recognize that death affects children in different ways and wanted to remind you that our guidance counselors are available to provide support and resources to yoru children here, at school,” she wrote.
The Newton Health and Human Services Department also offered resources,suggesting videos from mindwise to help individuals cope with traumatic events.
