Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell told a 911 dispatcher that his brother, Ciarre Campbell, is diagnosed with schizophrenia and is mentally ill during a call made the day their mother was killed, according to audio obtained by TMZ Sports on July 2, 2026.

Ciarre Campbell faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife following the death of 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, Us Weekly confirmed on July 1, 2026.

The victim was found inside a townhome in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta on June 30, 2026. WHSV reported that Nateal Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene with several cuts to her neck.

How did the 911 call and police response unfold?

Calais Campbell, 39, contacted emergency services to request a wellness check at the Buckhead residence. In the recorded audio, he noted that his brother had driven his mother’s car, which he described as unusual because Ciarre does not drive.

Calais told the dispatcher he attempted to enter the home through a window and stated that neighbor’s camera footage showed their mother never left the house, despite claims to the contrary. He informed the dispatcher he lacked the garage door code and had no other means of entry.

Police later revealed in a press release that an unidentified male had barricaded himself inside the home. Lieutenant Christapher Butler told reporters that authorities had received calls related to the residence in April 2026 regarding a possible arson incident.

Butler added that there were indications of mental health issues involving an individual at the property.

What is the legal status of Ciarre Campbell?

Ciarre Campbell is currently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife. Defense attorney Jay Abt told WSBTV that police have executed search warrants for DNA, clothing, and the home.

What is the legal status of Ciarre Campbell?

Abt stated he is defending Ciarre and the Campbell family while protesting his client’s innocence.

We vigorously protest [Ciarre’s] innocence. We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him and, most importantly, the Campbell family, I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time. (Jay Abt)

How have the family and Baltimore Ravens responded?

The Campbell family released a statement confirming the death of their matriarch, though the statement did not mention Ciarre as a suspect.

We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.

The Baltimore Ravens issued a statement offering support to the athlete and his family.

We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother. We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.

Calais Campbell signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Ravens in May 2026. He announced in June 2026 that this would likely be his final professional season.
