An oceanfront Malibu mansion owned by Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage sustained severe damage after a massive sinkhole swallowed its driveway and a portion of the adjacent street, according to local officials and news reports. The beachfront property, which Cage purchased for $10.5 million in 2024, sits along Sea Level Drive where high surf and coastal erosion triggered the collapse.

Malibu Mansion Driveway Collapses Into Massive Sinkhole

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, firefighters discovered the collapsed driveway at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday after responding to reports of a suspected gas main break, as reported by outlets including ABC7 and the Daily Mail. Aerial coverage from KTLA showed the multi-level residential structure standing directly on the edge of a deep crater that wiped out the entryway and part of the roadway. The City of Malibu stated via social media that the erosion severed a water line and a gas line beneath the property. The Southern California Gas Company was dispatched to the scene Tuesday morning to shut off the gas main and secure the area. The City’s Building Safety Division subsequently red-tagged five homes, prohibiting entry, and officials issued an evacuation order for the affected properties.

Coastal Erosion and Hurricane Marie Remnants Drive Damage

According to reporting from the Daily Mail and The Hollywood Reporter, the structural failure stems from severe coastal erosion battering the Southern California coastline. Over the weekend preceding the collapse, the remnants of Hurricane Marie generated high surf, heavy swells, and localized flooding along the Pacific shoreline. Local authorities reported that the sinkhole measures roughly 30 feet by 30 feet wide. Broadcast footage from KTLA indicated that no one appeared to be inside the residence at the time of the collapse, and the home reportedly appeared to be undergoing renovation work. No injuries have been reported.

Property History and Hollywood Background

The four-level, nearly 4,000-square-foot residence was constructed in the 1990s by the late Jose Liberman, co-founder of Liberman Broadcasting, according to historical details provided to The New York Times. Lenard Liberman, Jose’s son and Liberman Broadcasting co-founder, told the newspaper that the property served as a family retreat before it was sold to Cage in 2024. Cage, born Nicolas Kim Coppola, earned an Academy Award in 1996 for his role in Leaving Las Vegas. As a member of a prominent filmmaking dynasty, his career spans decades with notable credits including Moonstruck, Raising Arizona, Gone in 60 Seconds, and National Treasure. Representatives for the actor were reached for comment by entertainment media outlets, but had not issued a public statement at the time of publication.
