Nintendo 3DS Support Officially Ends, marking the End of an Era
Its a significant moment for handheld gaming enthusiasts as the Nintendo 3DS era has officially concluded. This week, Nintendo formally ended its repair service for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, the final model in the 3DS family to recieve support from the company.
The cessation of service, effective September 4th, 2024, was anticipated, but Nintendo’s official proclamation on X (formerly Twitter) confirms the end. The company stated it would no longer be able to repair the New Nintendo 2DS XL.
The History of the Nintendo 3DS Family
The Nintendo 3DS family of handheld consoles, launched in 2011, was a successor to the Nintendo DS. It introduced glasses-free 3D gaming, a feature that initially drew both excitement and criticism. The line included several models:
- Nintendo 3DS: The original model,released in 2011.
- nintendo 3DS XL: A larger version of the original, released in 2012.
- Nintendo 2DS: A more affordable,streamlined version without the 3D feature,released in 2013.
- New Nintendo 3DS: An upgraded model with improved processing power and a C-Stick,released in 2014 (Japan only initially).
- New Nintendo 3DS XL: A larger version of the New Nintendo 3DS, released in 2015.
- New Nintendo 2DS XL: The final model, released in 2017, combining features of the New 3DS with the 2DS’s affordability.
The 3DS boasted a strong library of games, including titles like Pokémon X and Y, Super Mario 3D Land, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Why Support is Ending Now
The end of repair services is a natural result of the console’s age and the release of its successor, the Nintendo Switch. As parts become increasingly scarce and the cost of maintaining the aging hardware rises, it becomes economically unsustainable for nintendo to continue offering official repairs. the New Nintendo 2DS XL was the last remaining model receiving support, indicating a complete phase-out of the 3DS line.
Nintendo has been gradually phasing out support for the 3DS family for several years. The eShop for 3DS titles was discontinued in March 2023, meaning new digital games can no longer be purchased directly from Nintendo.
