Nintendo is implementing price adjustments on a range of its products, a move influenced by evolving global trade dynamics and customs duties. While the company is striving too shield its core gaming experiences from immediate price hikes, consumers can expect to see changes on certain accessories and older console models.
Price Adjustments on Accessories and Older Models
The Japanese gaming giant has announced that the prices of various Nintendo products will be adjusted. This includes popular accessories for the upcoming switch 2, Amiibo figures, and the “Rénée-Matin Connected Nintendo Alarmo.” the company has explicitly stated that the price tags on its video games and the new Switch 2 console itself will remain unchanged for now. However, Nintendo has also cautioned that “adjustments may be necessary in the future,” hinting at potential future price revisions as the market evolves.
Production Shifts and the Impact of Tariffs
This pricing strategy comes as Nintendo, like many other major electronics manufacturers, grapples with the repercussions of tariffs imposed by the United States. The company has been actively diversifying its production base to mitigate risks associated with trade policies.
Back in 2019, Nintendo began reducing its reliance on china, which was already facing the threat of significant American customs duties. This strategic shift saw a portion of its production relocated to Vietnam. Today, more than half of Nintendo’s consoles are assembled in Vietnam and cambodia. Unfortunately, these two nations are now also subject to new customs duties, with Vietnam facing a 20% tariff and Cambodia a 19% tariff, directly impacting production costs.
Canadian market Sees Price Increases
In parallel with these global adjustments, Nintendo also updated its pricing in Canada this past Friday. While the Switch 2 remains unaffected, the original Switch console has seen a price increase ranging from 20 to 60 Canadian dollars. popular game titles such as Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Wonder are also experiencing a price hike of 5 Canadian dollars. These changes reflect the broader economic pressures influencing the gaming industry worldwide.
