Davis Cup: Japan Secures Spot in 2025 Finals Qualifiers with 3-1 Win Over Colombia
Nishioka Yoshihito Wins Ace Showdown, Leads Japan to Victory
In the fourth match of the men’s tennis international team competition “Davis Cup” World Group I ”Japan vs. Colombia” (September 14th and 15th / Ariake Coliseum, Koto-ku, Tokyo / Hard Court), Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka (Miki House: Singles 84th place) defeated Colombia’s Nicolas Mejia (Singles 237th place) 7-5 6-4, securing Japan’s spot in next year’s Finals qualifiers. The match lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes.
This was the first time the two faced each other. Nishioka, 28, who first joined the Japanese national team in 2015, is competing in the Davis Cup for the 10th time, with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses in singles. Japan had won two singles matches on the first day and were in a strong position to win, but in the doubles match prior to this, Shintaro Mochizuki (Kinoshita Group: 1155th in doubles) and Yosuke Watanuki (SBC Medical Group: 453rd in doubles) lost 7-6 (4), 2-6, 3-6 to Nicolas Barrientos (53rd in doubles) and Cristian Rodriguez (107th in doubles).
Japan and Colombia have played against each other in the World Group Playoffs in 2013 and 2015, with Japan winning both times with 3 wins and 2 losses. Since 2019, the Davis Cup has changed to a new format developed in cooperation with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Cosmos, an investment organization founded by former Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique.
World Group I, in which 24 countries compete in a home and away format, is a best-of-three set match with two singles matches on the first day, and one doubles match and two singles matches (the first team to win three matches wins) on the second day. The 12 countries that win each match advance to the Finals Qualifiers the following year, and the 12 losing countries move on to the World Group I Playoffs.
