North Korea Secret Military Base: Irreversible Nuclear State
North Korea Secretly Builds Missile Base Near China
New research reveals North Korea has secretly constructed a missile operating base near its border with China, potentially housing six to nine nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The Sinpung-dong Missile Operating Base, located approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles) from the Chinese frontier, represents a significant component of north Korea’s evolving ballistic missile strategy and expanding nuclear deterrence capabilities.
This “undeclared” base is one of an estimated 15-20 ballistic missile facilities within North Korea that have never been formally declared, and was not part of previous denuclearization negotiations with the United States. The facility’s location and capabilities allow for potential launches from various locations, increasing the difficulty of detection during times of crisis.
The development comes as North Korea has been rapidly expanding its nuclear weapons program since the breakdown of the 2019 summit with the US, where disagreements over sanctions relief stalled progress. Kim Jong Un has as declared North Korea an “irreversible” nuclear state and called for a “rapid expansion” of its nuclear capabilities.
Further complicating the geopolitical landscape, North Korea has been strengthening ties with russia following the invasion of Ukraine.Reports indicate that North Korea has sent over 10,000 soldiers to Russia, along with significant supplies of artillery shells, missiles, and rocket systems. In return, there are indications Russia is providing assistance with advanced space and satellite technology, leveraging the shared technology between satellite launchers and ICBMs.
