North Korea Blasts US ‘Golden dome’ missile shield Plan
Pyongyang has condemned the United States’ proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, calling it a potential catalyst for nuclear war in space. The missile shield, envisioned by the U.S.to counter advanced aerial threats, has drawn sharp criticism from North Korea’s foreign ministry, according to state media reports.
The ministry characterized the plan as arrogant and self-righteous, accusing Washington of aggressively pursuing the militarization of outer space. They cautioned that the Golden Dome project could ignite a global arms race encompassing both nuclear weapons and space technology.
North Korea views the U.S. as a primary adversary and routinely objects to joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea. Hong Min, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, told AFP that North Korea likely perceives the Golden Dome as a significant threat to its nuclear capabilities.
Hong suggested that the U.S. missile defense program’s completion woudl compel North Korea to seek alternative methods to neutralize or bypass it. In 2022, North Korea declared itself a nuclear weapons state and has since conducted numerous ballistic and cruise missile tests.
China has also joined North Korea in criticizing the U.S. initiative. Beijing expressed “serious concern” over the Golden Dome, emphasizing its potential for offensive applications. China’s foreign ministry stated that the U.S. is prioritizing its own security at the expense of global strategic balance.
While many analysts acknowledge the need to modernize U.S. defense systems, some caution that the Golden Dome’s advancement could encounter technical and political hurdles. The project’s ample cost, initially estimated at $25 billion but possibly reaching twenty times that amount over several decades, could strain the U.S. defense budget.
What’s next
The international community will be watching closely to see how the U.S. proceeds with the Golden Dome project and how North Korea and China respond to its development.
