North Korea’s Military Reconnaissance Satellite Tracked by South Korea’s New Aegis Ship, King Jeongjo

Military Reconnaissance Satellite Launched by North Korea Tracked by South Korean Military

By Shin Geon, KBS News

Last night, the military reconnaissance satellite launched by North Korea was successfully tracked by our military’s ground warning radar and an Aegis ship located in the West and South Seas. This development comes as the fourth Aegis ship, the King Jeongjo, was unveiled, boasting significantly higher combat capabilities compared to the three Aegis ships currently owned by the Korean Navy.

The King Jeongjo, a next-generation Aegis destroyer, is capable of carrying out all operations in the air, the sea, and under the water. With its exceptional defensive capabilities, the Aegis ship is often referred to as the ‘Shield of God.’ Notably, it was designed and built independently, measuring 170 meters in length and boasting a displacement of 8,200 tons, making it the largest of the Korean warships. The ship’s stealth function has also been further improved, with most of its weapon systems hidden within its sleek body.

Furthermore, the integrated sonar system of the King Jeongjo has enhanced underwater detection capabilities for torpedoes. It is equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air guided missiles, allowing it to engage enemies on the ground and in the air simultaneously. One standout feature of the ship is its SM-6 surface-to-air interceptor missile, which intercepts ballistic missiles at a higher altitude than THAAD, serving as a core asset of Korea’s three-axis system to counter North Korean missiles.

According to Park Yong-yeol, the Head of the Special Ship Production Division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, “The King Jeongjo is the strongest combat ship capable of intercepting even ballistic missiles.”

Accompanying the King Jeongjo is the frigate Chungnam, the first frigate of the 3,600-ton class to establish a wireless network. Equipped with a phased array radar developed with domestic technology, the Chungnam can detect and track both anti-aircraft and anti-ship targets. Both ships have an electric propulsion system in addition to the existing gas turbine engine, enabling economic propulsion.

In conclusion, the King Jeongjo and Chungnam are expected to undergo trial evaluations and be delivered to the Navy at the end of next year. This marks a significant advancement in South Korea’s naval capabilities, demonstrating the country’s commitment to strengthening its defense systems.
