Democratic lawmakers led by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts urged Energy Secretary Chris Wright to take immediate action against soaring heating oil costs that they attributed to President Donald Trump’s war with Iran and administration policies, Reuters reported. In a letter dated Monday, the lawmakers stated that heating oil prices were about 60% higher than before the conflict, threatening families with roughly $600 more in winter heating bills.
Diesel Costs Drive up Heating Oil Prices
The price increases stem from the shared refining stream of heating oil and diesel, meaning that tight supplies and climbing diesel costs drive up heating expenses across the region. Reuters reported that diesel prices climbed above $6 a gallon, prompting the administration to scramble for supply solutions ahead of the winter season. Approximately one-third of New England homes rely on heating oil, with that share reaching about half in certain states.
Political Pressure in Northeast Senate Races
The soaring energy expenses intensified political pressure on the Trump administration ahead of next month’s U.S. midterm elections, landing directly in two competitive Northeast Senate contests. Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins faces a tough reelection fight, while New Hampshire features an open Senate race between Democrat Chris Pappas and Republican John Sununu, according to nonpartisan election analysts cited by Reuters.

Calls to Release Emergency Oil Reserves
In response to the price spike, Maine Senator Susan Collins and independent Maine Senator Angus King urged President Trump to tap the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve. That reserve holds about 1 million barrels of fuel and has not been used since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, according to Reuters reporting.
Trump Expands Tax-Exempt Diesel Access
We urge you to support an immediate end to the war and to stop blocking or restricting Department of Energy programs that would help American families lower their energy bills.
