A Family Connection to Tolkien and C.S. Lewis
according to the auction house, this particular copy originates from the family library of Hubert Priestley, a botanist who passed away in 1944. Interestingly, Hubert was the brother of Sir Raymond Edward Priestley, a renowned geologist with strong connections to the University of Oxford – where Tolkien himself was a professor.
The link doesn’t end there. Both Raymond Priestley and Tolkien maintained a correspondence with C.S. Lewis, the celebrated author of The Chronicles of Narnia. While a definitive confirmation of a close friendship between Tolkien and Priestley remains elusive, the auction house notes it’s likely they knew each other, given their shared circles and academic ties. Imagine the conversations that might have taken place between these literary giants!
