From October 20th ⁤to‍ 25th, ‍2023, the City Hall of Nova Petrópolis, through its municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment, hosted the 4th Zero ⁢Waste ⁣Week. This environmental initiative aimed to raise awareness about waste generation and promote responsible disposal practices among residents. The week-long event was part of a broader month-long series of programs targeting schools and the wider⁣ community.

Training and ⁣Community Engagement

The⁢ initiative ⁤began with training sessions for key community stakeholders.On October 1st, 2023,⁢ professionals from the Municipal Department of Agriculture ⁤and Environment collaborated with ⁣Emater/RS-Ascar to conduct training for school cooperatives and scout groups at the 1º ⁣de Maio State School. This focused on building capacity within youth‍ organizations⁤ to champion zero-waste principles.

Further extending the reach,the Coletivo Lixo Zero de⁣ Nova Petrópolis held a training session on October 15th,2023,specifically for the Municipality’s Community Health Agents. ⁣The goal was to equip these agents with deeper knowledge of sustainable practices and waste management techniques, empowering them‍ to disseminate this data⁢ throughout their communities. This “train-the-trainer” approach is⁣ crucial for long-term behavioral change.

Special Waste Tire Collection

A key component of the‍ Zero Waste Week was a‍ special collection drive ⁣for waste tires, running from October⁢ 6th to 30th, 2023, at the⁢ Department of⁢ Health and Social Assistance. This initiative collected 58 tires, ensuring their ecologically ⁣sound⁢ disposal.⁤ This collection directly supports the ‍Nova Petrópolis Health Surveillance ⁣program, which aims to prevent the breeding of aedes ⁢aegypti mosquitoes – vectors for diseases like dengue.

Tires present a notable environmental challenge due to their non-biodegradable nature and potential to collect standing⁢ water, creating ⁤breeding grounds for mosquitoes. ‍ Proper disposal, frequently enough⁢ involving recycling into materials like asphalt or fuel, is essential for public health and environmental protection.
