Novak Djokovic to Face Juan Martin del Potro in Farewell Match
Novak Djokovic will play a farewell exhibition match against Juan Martin del Potro, who feels “terrible” after retiring two years ago. Del Potro ended his professional career at the Argentina Open in 2022, in a deeply emotional moment.
Del Potro, a former World No. 3 and US Open champion, faced numerous injuries that led to multiple surgeries. His struggles began in 2019 when he injured his knee at Queen’s Club. He underwent four surgeries on his right knee from June 2019 to March 2021, ultimately announcing his final tournament in 2022.
In a recent social media video, Del Potro explained that he secretly underwent two more surgeries afterward, hoping for a comeback that never materialized. He shared, “Nobody knew this, but the day after my last match, I had my fifth knee surgery. I wanted to keep it private to avoid constant questions about my return.”
Del Potro described the challenges he faced since his last match, including daily pain and medication. He mentioned taking six or seven pills a day, some for anxiety, and noted how this affected his quality of life. Despite these hurdles, he is preparing for one more match.
The exhibition, titled “El Último Desafío” (The Last Challenge), will take place on December 1 at the Estadio Mary Terán de Weiss in Buenos Aires. Del Potro expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m training and want to be in the best shape possible. If I can be at peace and happy on the court for a few hours, it will be beautiful.”
The tennis community is eager to support Del Potro in his farewell, celebrating his resilience and contributions to the sport.
