The New South Wales government is investing A$492 million ($320.52 million) to develop a new Health Pathology Statewide Hub, enhancing the state’s clinical pathology infrastructure. The funding supports the construction of a new facility for the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research (ICPMR) and upgrades to the state’s only high-security PC4 biocontainment laboratory.
Located at the Westmead Health Precinct, the hub will boost pathology services, especially in testing and researching high-risk infectious diseases. This project expands the government’s health infrastructure commitment, which includes investments in hospitals and health services across NSW, along with accommodations for health workers in regional areas.
Pathology services are vital in medical diagnostics, with over 100,000 clinical and scientific investigations conducted daily in NSW, influencing 70% of medical decisions. The Westmead-based laboratory, established in 1978, is overdue for refurbishment and currently performs 3.5 million tests annually. The new statewide hub will offer local and statewide clinical pathology and public health services, supporting medical research and specialized services.
The upgraded facility will incorporate technology, innovation, and best practices in specialist pathology service delivery, ensuring major referral hospitals maintain on-site laboratories and fostering collaboration between pathologists and clinicians. The hub will also connect with regional centers like Dubbo, Lismore, Tamworth, and Wagga Wagga, addressing the needs of regional and rural health districts and supporting education, training, and research. These capabilities are crucial for emergency departments requiring urgent services and additional testing.
NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “Since being elected,we have been focused on improving health services and building hospitals which meet the needs of some of our most rapidly growing communities.”
This declaration follows a previous commitment by the state government, including an additional A$700 million towards the New bankstown Hospital. The health pathology investment aims to modernize and expand pathology services across new South Wales.
