“Nuclear power is an alternative to carbon-neutral energy”, President Jeong Jae-hoon of KHNP

[이데일리 윤종성 기자] President Jeong Jae-hoon of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power said on the 27th, “Nuclear power is an energy source that emits almost no carbon dioxide, and will become an energy alternative to lead the realization of carbon neutrality.”

Jae-Hoon Jeong, president of KHNP, is giving an opening address at the ‘2022 Korea Atomic Energy Annual Conference’ held on the 27th.

President Jung said this at the opening remarks of the ‘2022 Korea Nuclear Energy Annual Conference’ held in BEXCO, Busan on the same day, and said, “The nuclear power industry must do its best to meet the social responsibility required in the future by actively responding to this trend of the times and enhancing competitiveness.”

In order to fulfill the mission of the era of carbon neutrality, President Jung, who is the chairman of the Korea Atomic Energy Industry Association, which hosted the event, urged the safety of nuclear power plants, creation of new growth engines, healthy development of the nuclear power plant ecosystem, and social responsibility.

As a specific new growth engine, he mentioned the small module reactor (SMR), which has recently been attracting attention from the nuclear industry, and introduced that “many countries are making efforts to develop a technology linking SMR and hydrogen production, and various discussions are underway in Korea.”

“The entire nuclear power industry is like a single organism,” said President Jung.

Meanwhile, President Chung, who took office in April 2018 after the Moon Jae-in administration took office, is known to have taken the lead in promoting the nuclear phase-out policy. He was indicted last year and is awaiting trial on charges of being involved in manipulating the economic evaluation results as if the economic evaluation of the Wolsong Unit 1 nuclear power plant was not economical.
