Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeev, commenting on the statements of Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and former President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev on the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a successful counteroffensive by the Ukrainian defense forces, urged to be prepared for any scenarios. It is reported by the Rheinische Post.

“We saw that Putin is ready for anything… We, Ukrainians, must be ready for any development of events,” the ambassador said, commenting on the possibility of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons.

The diplomat also recalled how no one believed when Ukraine warned for years that the Kremlin was using gas as a weapon.

According to him, peace must be fought for, so Russia must be defeated, otherwise there will be no peace. It is in the interests of the free world, Makeyev says, that war criminals be held accountable, as are their leaders who ordered these crimes. Russia also has to pay financially for the damage done – not European or German taxpayers, but Russian ones. Citizens of Russia must understand that this war brought them only losses, their reputation in the world is completely undermined, Russian society must understand that something is wrong in their country.

At the same time, he is convinced that the Russians should understand their mistakes and say at least “sorry” after the war, but it is hard for him to imagine that in the next 10, 20 or even 30 years, a democratically elected Russian president will come to Kiev and kneel. Ukrainian soldiers – as the German Willy Brandt once did in Warsaw.

“We hope that after the end of the war there will be a treaty that will force Russia to comply with international law. I’m not sure if a mediator is needed. I believe that this war will lead to tectonic changes in the entire world system … We do not need mediators for peace negotiations , we need allies. It is important for Ukraine to win this war,” he added.

Earlier, the White House criticized comments by Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that Russia could resort to nuclear weapons if Ukraine succeeds in its counteroffensive. It is also reported that the United States continues to closely monitor the situation, but sees no reason to correct its own nuclear position.
