Nvidia disclosed a massive $21 billion equity stake in SpaceX at the end of the second quarter, highlighting deep financial ties between the semiconductor giant and Elon Musk’s private rocket conglomerate, according to an SEC filing submitted on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026.
Nvidia Holds 123 Million SpaceX Shares Following xAI Merger
Nvidia owns 122.8 million Class A shares in SpaceX, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing cited by CNBC. The massive stake arrived via Nvidia’s $10 billion investment in Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, made as part of a $20 billion funding round in January 2026, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to CNBC anonymously because terms weren’t made public. SpaceX subsequently acquired xAI in February 2026 in a deal valued at $1.25 trillion.
Market Decline Reduces Value of Nvidia Holding
While the SpaceX position was valued at nearly $21 billion at the end of June 2026, market fluctuations have already reduced that total. SpaceX shares closed at $140 on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, dropping down from $170.86 at the end of June following the rocket maker’s public market debut in June.
That downward price movement means Nvidia’s shares are now worth approximately $17.2 billion, down from the peak valuation recorded at the close of the quarter. Even with the public market dip, the position represents an enormous financial return on Nvidia’s initial cash outlay made less than a year prior. Data from FactSet positions Nvidia as the sixth-largest investor in SpaceX, far behind Alphabet at roughly $78 billion and Elon Musk, who remains the dominant owner with a stake worth about $850 billion.
Exclusive Infrastructure Commitments Strengthen Partnership
The financial entanglement runs parallel to heavy hardware commitments between the two companies. Musk stated during SpaceX’s second-quarter earnings call earlier in August 2026 that the aerospace company will exclusively use Nvidia chips in its AI data centers.
Musk noted on the call that Nvidia graphics processing units possess the best architecture for training and inference of advanced AI models and related services. Furthermore, Musk told listeners on the call that he expects SpaceX will secure a significant allocation of Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin GPUs next year.
