NYC Snowball Fight: Police Pelted, Investigation Launched & Mayor Faces Criticism
Snowball Fight in Washington Square Park Sparks Political Clash in New York City
New York City police are investigating after officers were pelted with snowballs during a large snowball fight at Washington Square Park in Manhattan on Monday, an incident that has quickly escalated into a political dispute between City Hall and law enforcement.
Video footage of the event shows two uniformed officers attempting to navigate a walkway as snowballs are thrown at them from multiple directions. The officers, visibly frustrated, pushed at least two individuals to the ground while continuing to be targeted by projectiles. One officer had snow mushed onto their head, and another was seen rubbing their eye.
The New York Police Department stated on Tuesday that multiple uniformed officers were struck in the face with snowballs and were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The department has released images of two individuals they are seeking to identify in connection with the incident and is asking for the public’s assistance.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the behavior as “disgraceful” and “criminal,” signaling a firm stance against those involved. The incident has drawn swift condemnation from various political figures, with many critics of Mayor Zohran Mamdani using it as an opportunity to question his commitment to supporting law enforcement.
Mamdani, however, initially appeared to downplay the severity of the situation. During a news conference on Tuesday, when asked whether anyone involved should face criminal charges, he responded, “From the videos that I’ve seen, it looks like a snowball fight.” He later posted on X, stating, “Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving. Treat them with respect. If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.”
The mayor’s response drew immediate criticism from the city’s largest police union. Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association, issued a statement calling Mamdani’s reaction a “complete failure of leadership.”
“This was not just a ‘snowball fight.’ This was an assault,” Hendry stated. “By ignoring their injuries and dismissing the incident, the mayor has sent a disgraceful message to every police officer who serves this city.”
The controversy comes early in Mamdani’s tenure as mayor and follows past criticisms he leveled against the police department during his 2020 campaign. He has since walked back those past remarks, but the incident has reignited those debates.
The snowball fight itself occurred following a historic blizzard that blanketed the Northeast. What began as a seemingly harmless and viral event quickly turned confrontational when participants began throwing chunks of snow and ice at responding officers, according to the Police Benevolent Association. The NYPD reported that officers sustained head and face injuries as a result.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between city officials and law enforcement, and raises questions about the appropriate response to public demonstrations and the safety of police officers in increasingly volatile situations. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
