Updated June 17,2025
A federal monitor’s report has revealed that the New York city Police Department’s Community Response Team (CRT) is stopping and searching New Yorkers unjustly, with a disproportionate impact on Black and Hispanic men. The report has ignited fresh calls for the unit to be disbanded.
Adding to the controversy, Matthew Pontillo, former NYPD chief and author of the 2023 audit of the CRT, suggested the team’s misconduct could be even more extensive than documented. Pontillo noted his review found officers frequently failed to activate body-worn cameras, hindering a full account of incidents. The recent inquiry relied heavily on body-worn camera footage to assess officer conduct.
Despite the findings, the mayor’s office has not commented, deferring to the NYPD, which also has not responded to questions. Mayor Eric Adams has previously defended the Community Response Team.
The NYPD has also defended the CRT’s work and touted the unit’s confiscation of illegal motorbikes and ATVs.
