‘Oblivion Remastered’ Performance Patch Arrives on Xbox, Mixed Results Reported
The release of “Oblivion Remastered” wasn’t entirely unexpected, given prior hints and speculation. However, the extent of the graphical overhaul has surprised many. While retaining the original game’s mechanics, the visuals have been significantly updated using Unreal Engine 5.
The graphical enhancements include new lumen-based lighting, redesigned character models, updated animations and effects, and modern user interface improvements such as a revamped level system, sprint functionality, and new lip-sync technology. Digital Foundry, a technology analysis site, recently examined the PC version and has now turned its attention to the Xbox Series X and S consoles.
Xbox Series X/S Performance: A Patch, But Not a Panacea
The Xbox Series X offers two graphics modes: a quality mode targeting 30 frames per second (FPS) and a performance mode aiming for 60 FPS.The quality mode prioritizes enhanced global lighting and higher detail levels, operating at an average resolution of 1440p with variable scaling. The performance mode reduces some visual details to achieve a smoother 60 FPS, but frequently enough falls short, especially in expansive open-world environments.
Generally, the game maintains a stable 60 FPS in smaller, enclosed areas like dungeons on the Series X. However, brief stutters can occur during saving, combat,or when initiating dialog. The performance issues are more noticeable in the open world. Rapid traversal, such as riding, frequently results in stuttering and frame rate drops, sometimes dipping to 40-50 FPS. These fluctuations suggest CPU limitations, mirroring issues observed in the PC version, especially during fast movement.
According to Digital Foundry, an Xbox update released April 25, 2025, has improved performance compared to the initial release, especially in graphically demanding areas. Frame rates reportedly increased by up to 16 FPS in certain scenes. Despite these improvements, frame rate drops persist when traversing the open world, particularly at specific locations. The update reportedly did not introduce any significant visual downgrades.

playstation 5: Awaiting Optimization
The PlayStation 5 version presents a similar situation, even though Digital Foundry’s analysis is based on a pre-patch build. While stable 60 FPS performance is achievable in dungeons with occasional hiccups, the open world experiences frame rate drops, often fluctuating between 35 and 50 FPS, according to the technology site. It remains to be seen whether a future update will bring the PlayStation 5 version’s performance in line with the optimized Xbox version.
Xbox Series S: Compromises for Performance
Xbox Series S players are limited to a single 30 FPS mode, which suffers from inconsistent frame pacing and noticeable graphical reductions. The resolution drops to approximately 900p,and details in vegetation, textures, and shadow quality have been reduced. Digital Foundry reports that “Oblivion Remastered” offers impressive graphical improvements and a modern take on the classic game. Though, essential performance problems, particularly when streaming large open-world areas, remain a significant concern.
