The Titan submersible gained notoriety in June 2023 when it imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreckage, killing Rush and four other passengers. The incident sparked global media coverage and raised serious questions about the safety and regulation of such expeditions.
Joseph Assi,a videographer hired by Rush, explained in the documentary that OceanGate needed publicity. According to Assi, the plan was to create videos that would capture public attention. Ideas included taking Pearl Jam on the submarine and a concept for a floating city capable of submerging.
Fortunately, Pearl Jam never participated in any dives on the Titan. The band recently concluded a spring tour, and frontman Eddie Vedder is scheduled to headline the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California, in September, alongside Green Day and Hozier.
