Gbenga daniel’s Suspension from APC: Ward Insists Decision Stands

What Happened?

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in ward 4, Sabo, Sagamu, Ogun State, is maintaining the indefinite suspension of former Ogun ⁣State Governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel. The suspension stems from allegations of anti-party activities.‍ The ward leadership asserts that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) does ⁣not have the authority to overturn the suspension, as it was properly imposed by the ward executives according to the party’s constitution.

The Ward’s Position

During a press briefing held ‍at the ward secretariat in sabo, Sagamu, Ward Secretary Aduroja Oluwole, alongside Ward Chairman Adebayo Ismail and other party officials, addressed‍ the media. They responded to the NWC’s statement that Daniel ⁢remains a bona fide ⁣member of the APC. Oluwole clarified that while the NWC possesses the power to ‌suspend members,it cannot supersede ⁤disciplinary actions initiated and carried out by executives at the ward, local government, state,or zonal levels.

Oluwole specifically referenced Article 21(5)(vii) of the APC Constitution, stating that while it⁢ grants the NWC the power⁤ to suspend erring members,it does⁣ not negate the authority of ⁣Executive Councils at any level, nor does it allow the NWC to review their decisions. He emphasized that the exercise of disciplinary power by any Executive Council⁣ is independent.

Constitutional Basis ⁣of the Dispute

The core of the disagreement lies in the interpretation of the APC constitution regarding disciplinary powers. The ward argues that the constitution establishes a hierarchical system where disciplinary actions‍ originate at the grassroots level (ward) and can be escalated, ⁤but ‌not overturned, by higher bodies like the NWC. ⁤ This interpretation suggests a degree⁤ of autonomy for ward-level ⁣decisions.

The NWC’s position, as reported, appears to assert ⁣it’s overarching authority within⁢ the party structure. This creates a conflict regarding ⁣the balance of power between the national leadership and local‌ chapters.

Background⁢ on Gbenga⁤ Daniel

Gbenga Daniel served as the Governor of Ogun State⁤ from 2003 to 2011. He was initially a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the APC. He currently represents Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, having been elected in ⁣February 2023 ‌ Premium Times.
