Global oil prices retreated on October 9 as United States President Donald Trump announced that Washington will not attack Iran prior to the November 3 midterm congressional elections, easing immediate supply fears following volatility in the Middle East. Reuters reported that Brent crude futures fell 72 cents, or 0.7%, to $103.53 a barrel by 0220 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 52 cents, or 0.6%, to $90.97.

The pullback follows a volatile week for energy markets driven by escalating attacks on crude shipping through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the single-day dip, Brent contracts remained on track for weekly gains after settling 4% higher on Thursday, according to Reuters, while WTI headed toward a slight weekly decline amid competing domestic supply disruptions in the US.

Trump Rules Out Pre-Election Strike After Productive Talks

President Trump stated via Truth Social that the United States is holding productive discussions with Iran and confirmed that no military strike is planned before voters go to the polls on November 3. Trump described Iran as being in very bad condition economically and militarily, while maintaining that the US naval blockade would remain in place and that oil was flowing through the Strait of Hormuz in record numbers.

The presidential assurance directly countered recent reports from The New York Times, cited by The Economic Times, indicating that the Pentagon had prepared plans for a three-day military operation targeting Iranian drone and missile arsenals alongside energy infrastructure.

US Sanctions Target Vessels Transporting Iranian Oil

Even as diplomatic talks progressed, economic pressure on Tehran continued to mount as the war entered its eighth month. The United States announced fresh sanctions targeting individuals, operational networks, and 17 vessels involved in transporting Iranian crude, oil products, and petrochemicals.

The market had surged earlier in the week following a wave of maritime incidents. The UK Maritime Organization reported at least nine attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf during the first seven days of October alone, according to The Economic Times, matching half of the total incidents recorded throughout the previous month. The strategic waterway carried shipments equal to roughly 20% of global oil and fuel prior to the outbreak of hostilities.

Hurricane Disruptions Compound Gulf of Mexico Supply Pressures

The storm-related shutdowns contrasted sharply with conflicting regional reports regarding the status of Middle Eastern export routes. While Trump claimed record export volumes through the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Fars news agency reported heavy explosions near the waterway's southern route late Thursday after passing tankers were struck by sea mines, as noted by The Economic Times.

I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition … we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd.
