The Oilers will face the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in a rematch of last year’s final, which Florida won in seven games. Game 1 is set for Wednesday night in Edmonton. Oddsmakers have the series as a near toss-up. This marks the 12th Stanley Cup Final rematch in NHL history.
Edmonton jumped to an early 3-0 lead, scoring on their first two shots. Mattias Janmark, Jeff Skinner, Evander Kane and Kasperi Kapanen also scored for the Oilers. Leon Draisaitl and Jake Walman each contributed two assists.
Jason Robertson scored twice, and Roope hintz added a goal for Dallas, who saw their season end in the Western Conference finals for the third straight year.
“You’ve got to keep knocking on the door,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We chased every single game in this series… It was the story of the entire series.”
McDavid’s crucial goal came after Mattias Ekholm blocked a shot by Thomas Harley. McDavid collected the puck and beat Stars goalie Casey DeSmith with 5:32 remaining in the second period.
“That’s a Connor McDavid kind of play and that’s just the player he is,” Perry said.
Skinner, playing in his first postseason game this year, scored his first career playoff goal.
What’s next
The Edmonton Oilers now prepare to face the Florida Panthers in a highly anticipated Stanley Cup Final rematch, seeking to avenge last year’s defeat and claim the championship.
