A New Mandate for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the WTO, has officially announced her candidacy for a second term. This decision follows a formal request from the African Group, supported by a broad consensus expressed at the recent WTO General Council in July.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has been praised for her leadership and efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the organization in the face of global trade challenges. A former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance, she has made significant contributions to the WTO since taking office on March 1, 2021.
A Favorable Response to the African Group’s Request
In a statement addressed to Ambassador Petter Ølberg, Chairman of the General Council of the WTO, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized her favorable response to the request of the African Group. This decision was made considering the huge and diverse support expressed by members of the organization.
WTO Spokesperson Ismaila Dieng confirmed that the re-election process would now be managed by the Chairman of the General Council, overseeing the essential next steps for the future of the organization led by Dr. Okonjo-Iweala.
