A New Mandate for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and ​African to lead the WTO, has‍ officially announced her candidacy for a second term. This ⁢decision ⁤follows a formal request from the African Group, supported by a broad consensus expressed at the recent WTO General Council in July.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has been praised for her leadership and efforts to ⁤strengthen the effectiveness of‍ the organization in the face of global trade​ challenges. A former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs ⁣and⁤ Finance, she has made significant ⁢contributions to the WTO ​since taking office on March 1, ⁤2021.

A ​Favorable‍ Response to the African⁤ Group’s Request

In a statement addressed to Ambassador⁢ Petter ‌Ølberg, Chairman of the General Council⁤ of the WTO, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized ⁢her⁤ favorable response to the request of​ the African Group. This decision ⁢was made considering the huge⁤ and diverse‍ support‌ expressed by⁢ members of the organization.

WTO Spokesperson Ismaila Dieng confirmed that the ⁢re-election process would now be⁣ managed by the ‍Chairman of the ‍General Council, overseeing‌ the essential next steps for‌ the future of⁤ the organization led by⁤ Dr. Okonjo-Iweala.
