Lyon supporters unable to witness Corentin Tolisso’s return to the French national team can find solace in the significant depiction of Olympique Lyonnais’ youth academy graduates within the squad. Didier Deschamps’ recent selections for the upcoming Nations league Final Four showcase a strong Lyon influence, a trend less common in recent years. Despite some call-ups arising from player absences, four players developed in Lyon are included in the national team roster.
The Lyon contingent comprises Pierre Kalulu (born 2000), Malo Gusto (2003), Rayan cherki (2003), and Bradley Barcola (2002). Kalulu, following a solid season with Juventus Turin, becomes the 12th player from the Lyon academy to receive his first senior call-up from Deschamps. Cherki is the 13th. While kalulu has been a regular in France’s youth setups, earning 40 caps since the U18 level, he waited until his fifth season in Italy to break into Deschamps’ squad. He may face competition from Malo Gusto, who earned his first cap in October 2023 against the Netherlands.
PSG Only Club with More Players Under Deschamps
After a promising second season with the national team, the former Lyon player benefited from Jules Koundé’s injury to reclaim his place in the squad. Like Kalulu, he has been on the French Football Federation’s radar for several years, evidenced by his 16 youth selections. he will reunite with rayan Cherki, the 18th Lyon player called up by Deschamps since his tenure began. Only Paris Saint-Germain has had more players selected during that time. Cherki is the first Lyon player selected as Léo Dubois in 2021.
Bradley barcola, identified early and often playing above his age group, also joins the squad. Unlike the other three, Barcola’s rise to the international level was gradual. Despite performing well in Lyon’s youth ranks, a loan move to Ligue 2 or switzerland was considered two years ago. He had no prior selections before the U20s, suggesting he wasn’t always considered a top prospect among French players born in 2002. in the youth ranks, players like Adil Aouchiche, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Nathanael Mbuku, and isaac Lihadji appeared to be ahead. This underscores the unpredictable nature of football.
