Olive Garden Cook Dies in Apparent Suicide at Pennsylvania Restaurant

A man died after entering a deep fryer at an Olive Garden restaurant in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in what authorities have confirmed was a suicide attempt. The incident occurred last Friday, prompting a temporary closure of the restaurant and a wave of distress among staff and customers.

According to dispatch audio from the Lycoming County fire and EMS service, the man, whose identity has not been released, removed his clothing before entering the fryer “head first.” A dispatcher relayed to officers, “Burn victim at the Olive Garden. I don’t have a lot of details, people screaming, some kind of a burn victim.”

The employee was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A female colleague sustained minor burns while attempting to intervene, alongside other staff members and at least one customer who reportedly tried to stop the man from harming himself. A second ambulance was dispatched to the restaurant to treat her injuries.

Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson Trooper Lauren Lesher confirmed to The Smoking Gun that the incident “was a suicide attempt,” adding, “Out of respect for the individual and their family, we do not release information.” Olive Garden has not yet issued a public statement regarding the tragedy.

The incident unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. Local time, triggering a chaotic response from emergency services. 911 calls revealed the frantic scene as witnesses described the unfolding events. “Male victim went head first into the fryers,” one operator reported to responding officers.

The restaurant was closed for several days following the incident but has since reopened. The tragedy has understandably shaken the community and raised questions about the well-being of workers in the food service industry.
