(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Joon-tae = On the 25th, at 8:30 in the morning, Lee Jin-hwa (50), who was waiting for a commuter bus to Hanam, misted his glasses.

Mr. Lee said, “Even though I was wearing underwear, brush pants, and even knitting, it was too cold. My mouth froze.”

Nearby, dozens of citizens on their way to work, wearing long padding, crossed their arms and stamped their feet while waiting for the bus.

On my first commute after the Lunar New Year holiday, I felt as if my body and mind were frozen because I encountered the coldest ‘strongest cold wave’ this winter.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the temperature in Seoul dropped to -17.2 degrees Celsius as of 8:00 am on the same day. Even the wind was strong, and the perceived temperature reached -23.3 degrees.

Many office workers hurried their steps with thick long padding that covers up to their thighs, scarves, gloves, and earplugs. It was not difficult to see citizens holding hot packs in their hands while wearing gloves.

Park Ye-jin (26), who goes to work near Jonggak, said, “Even in the heated subway, my feet were cold.”

It’s a tougher day for traders exposed to the cold wave.

Jeongmo (64), who sells dairy products in front of Exit 8 of Jamsil Station, braved the cold wearing a long jacket with pads and a neck warmer.

Mr said. Jeong, “I feel less cold than yesterday when the wind was blowing,” and “I can’t even do business as usual because of the cold.”

At the bus transfer center at Seoul Station, citizens who had spent the last day of the holiday at home and had just returned to Seoul were waiting for the bus to go to work. Citizens who came up from the relatively cold southern region had particular difficulty adapting.

Mr. Kim Bong-seok, an office worker who just came up from Ulsan by KTX, said, “It was very cold in Ulsan yesterday, but it was colder in Seoul, so I dressed warmly, but not is easy to bear. Perhaps because of the cold wave, even the train arrived 10 minutes late.”

High school football coach Yoo Mo, who came from Pohang, said, “I have to be on the field all day, but I’m worried about the cold wave.”

Citizens who use long distance buses with relatively long departure times on their way to work had to go through a fierce ‘boarding war’ to get on the bus even a little earlier.

Oh Byeong-hoon (25), an office worker, said, “Because of the cold, everyone seemed to be on edge to get on the bus even a little earlier.”
