Online Gambling Crackdown: Senator Calls Out E-Wallet Firms
Senator Hontiveros Calls for Stricter Online Gambling Regulations Amidst Rising Addiction Concerns
MANILA – Senator Risa Hontiveros has intensified her call for more robust regulations governing online gambling, citing a growing number of Filipinos, notably the youth, falling prey to addiction facilitated by the ease of access through mobile applications and digital platforms. The senator highlighted that current laws are struggling to keep pace with the rapid evolution of digital technology, leaving a significant gap in oversight and protection.
The Growing Shadow of Digital Betting
The senator’s advocacy stems from numerous pleas for assistance received by her office from families devastated by online gambling addiction. These heartbreaking accounts frequently enough detail individuals drowning in debt or, tragically, resorting to suicide due to the overwhelming pressures associated with their gambling habits.
“What’s clear is that our laws are being left behind by the rapid pace of technology,” Senator Hontiveros stated. “That’s why we’ve filed a bill to limit access to online gambling, particularly in e-wallets and super apps.”
The unchecked proliferation of digital betting platforms has created an environment where gambling is alarmingly accessible, requiring little more than a smartphone. This ease of access is a significant concern, especially for younger demographics who are increasingly exposed to these platforms.
E-Wallets and Super apps: A New Frontier for Concern
While major casino operators have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to responsible gaming practices,Senator Hontiveros emphasized that digital platforms must adopt a similar ethos.
“If big casinos say they are following regulations, that’s well and good. That means there should be no issue if we tighten access to online gambling,” she asserted.
The senator directly addressed the silence from e-wallet and super app companies, questioning their lack of proactive measures. “With so many complaints pointing to how phones have made online gambling too easy to access, why are e-wallet and super app companies silent? I hope that they would also take steps to self-regulate,” she urged.
Senator Hontiveros concluded by stressing that the imperative to regulate online gambling transcends mere legal compliance. it is, fundamentally, an issue of compassion and societal responsibility. The well-being of citizens, especially the vulnerable, must be at the forefront of any regulatory framework.
