Pakistan has reported at least 71 measles-related deaths among children in the first four months of 2026, with Sindh province accounting for the highest number of fatalities, according to official data cited by multiple news outlets.

Of the 71 deaths recorded nationwide between January and April 2026, Sindh reported 40 deaths, while Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa each recorded 12 deaths, and Balochistan accounted for four deaths.

Health officials have linked the surge in measles cases and deaths to a backlog of unvaccinated children resulting from disruptions to routine immunization services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Raj Kumar, Programme Director of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) in Sindh, stated that a “large cohort of unvaccinated children” had emerged during that period, contributing to the current outbreak.

The rising death toll coincides with a broader increase in infections, with 4,541 confirmed measles cases reported nationwide in the first four months of 2026. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest number of cases at 1,712, followed by Punjab (1,198), Sindh (1,183), Balochistan (17), Islamabad (55), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (151), and Gilgit-Baltistan (45).

The figures were released as Pakistan observed World Immunisation Week 2026 from April 24 to 30, under the theme “For Every Generation, Vaccines Work.” Health experts continue to warn of widening immunisation gaps and urge urgent action to address vaccine hesitancy and improve access to routine vaccination services, particularly in underserved areas.

In addition to measles, polio remains a persistent public health challenge in Pakistan. In 2026, one polio case was detected in Sindh’s Sujawal district. While the country reported 74 polio cases in 2024 and 31 in 2025, recent environmental sampling in Sindh has shown a decline in positivity rates from nearly 80 percent in 2025 to 24 percent, indicating progress in polio eradication efforts despite ongoing security concerns for vaccinators.

Khalid Shafi of the Pakistan Paediatric Association emphasized that while government efforts continue, multiple challenges persist in routine immunisation, with vaccine hesitancy being the most significant barrier. He called for targeted strategies to raise awareness about the importance of vaccinating children against preventable diseases like measles, and polio.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, particularly in unvaccinated young children. The measles vaccine, typically administered as part of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, is safe and effective in preventing infection and outbreaks when coverage rates are sufficiently high.

Public health officials stress that achieving and maintaining high vaccination coverage is critical to preventing further loss of life and controlling the spread of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases in Pakistan.

The situation underscores the need for sustained investment in immunisation programs, community engagement, and outreach to counteract misinformation and ensure that all children receive life-saving vaccines on schedule.

As of April 26, 2026, health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak closely and coordinate response efforts across provinces to mitigate further harm.

This report is based on verified information from official data released by Pakistani health authorities and reporting from Dawn, Gulf News, and other reputable news outlets covering the measles outbreak in Pakistan during the first four months of 2026.
