TORONTO – Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health is urging the creation of a national vaccination calendar and registry to address vulnerabilities exposed by the resurgence of measles in Canada. Dr. Kieran moore emphasized that Ontario first needs to implement a centralized digital vaccination system.
The Need for a coordinated Approach
In his annual report, recently submitted to the Ontario legislative assembly, Dr. Moore stresses the necessity of a coordinated effort across all levels of government and the healthcare system. This collaboration is crucial for effectively managing vaccine-preventable diseases, especially amid growing vaccine hesitancy.
For over two decades,health professionals and public health experts have advocated for a national vaccination registry. The Canadian Paediatric Society has been calling for the harmonization of the country’s vaccination schedules since 1997.
Ontario’s Vaccination Record System Lags Behind
Dr. Moore’s report indicates that Ontario is behind othre provinces, including British columbia, Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba, and Nova scotia, in modernizing its vaccination records.
This decentralized approach has led to confusion among parents, who are often responsible for maintaining their children’s vaccination records. In many provinces, family physicians primarily administer vaccines, unlike regions where public health nurses handle this role, facilitating easier data consolidation.
Economic Benefits of a National Vaccination Calendar
A national vaccination calendar could offer economic advantages by centralizing the supply chain. This would reduce costs through wholesale purchases, minimize duplicate vaccinations, and decrease avoidable hospitalizations.
