OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a specialized artificial intelligence tool designed to target the legal industry and compete directly with rival products from Anthropic. According to company announcements, the new offering provides advanced legal search capabilities, customized model settings, and integration plugins tailored for the 200 largest American law firms, collectively known as AmLaw 200.

Targeting Big Law and AmLaw 200 Firms

OpenAI is aiming its latest industry-specific release at the legal tech sector as the company prepares for an initial public offering. According to Jason Boehmig, who leads legal product at OpenAI, the firm is focusing on customer needs rather than competitors. Speaking at a press briefing regarding the product, Boehmig stated, You win by focusing on the customer and not the competition. Astra for Law is built on OpenAI’s most advanced and expensive model. Boehmig noted that the primary challenge for the development team involved maintaining cutting-edge capabilities while ensuring the output remains relevant to specialized knowledge work.

Technical Customizations and Reduced Hallucinations

To address industry requirements, OpenAI adjusted the underlying model settings. Sherwin Wu, a member of the technical staff at OpenAI, explained that the modifications ground the AI model in actual case law. According to Wu, this approach results in fewer hallucinations and much sounder legal reasoning. The tool also generates responses that are approximately twice as long as standard Astra outputs. Boehmig noted that longer responses directly reflect user feedback from attorneys who prefer detailed answers. Furthermore, the legal product team coordinated with OpenAI’s financial services division—which released ChatGPT for Financial Services—to incorporate a forthcoming citations feature into the legal offering.

Ecosystem Integrations and Industry Competition

The launch features deep software integrations with major legal tech firms. OpenAI is collaborating to embed its latest Astra model directly into third-party legal platforms such as Harvey and Legora. Additionally, the release introduces ChatGPT plugins from Harvey, Legora, Thomson Reuters, iManage, and DeepJudge. This release mirrors a similar legal product rollout from primary competitor Anthropic. Both companies have introduced suites of software integrations designed for legal professionals, though OpenAI has explicitly modified its underlying model settings and built custom tools specifically for legal casework.
