The Unexpected Challenges of Organ Performance
Performing on the organ is a uniquely demanding art form, requiring not only musical skill but also a deep understanding of the instrument’s intricate mechanics. Unlike pianos or other standardized instruments, each organ is distinct. Some traditional organs boast as many as 6,718 pipes, relying on a complex mechanical system where switching between sounds – known as registers – frequently enough necessitates the assistance of a dedicated operator.
Though, even modern organs, like the one at Elba, with its 4,765 pipes and electronically switched, digitally controlled registers, aren’t immune to unexpected issues. Organist Iveta, known for her perfectionism, recently faced just such a challenge during a performance of composer Philip Glass’s work.
A Moment of Crisis Averted
Just as Glass began to play, Iveta discovered that only two of the three organ consoles were functioning. “The orchestra continued in a glazed manner while I ran, catching and closing,” Iveta recounted, laughing as she recalled the frantic moments. “We all met soon,” – a testament to her rapid thinking and problem-solving skills under pressure.
The tension in the audience was palpable. Janis schipkevich, a member of the audience that night, described being so worried he momentarily forgot to breathe. The incident highlights the precarious nature of live performance, even for seasoned professionals.
The Organist’s Resilience
Iveta’s experience underscores the resilience and adaptability required of organists. Beyond musical talent, they must be prepared to troubleshoot technical difficulties on the fly, ensuring a seamless performance for the audience. The incident at Elba serves as a reminder that even with meticulous readiness, the unpredictable nature of live music can present unexpected hurdles.
