Ornithopter Bug Fixes: Devs Address ‘Goomba Stomping’ Issue
‘dune: Awakening’ Ornithopters Cause PvP Chaos; Fix in the Works
Updated june 14, 2025
Dune: Awakening, the online survival game based on Frank herbert’s novels, is facing a challenge: players are weaponizing Ornithopters, dragonfly-like helicopters, in player-versus-player combat. The developers are responding to the issue.
The adaptation allows players to construct bases and battle sandworms. However, the unexpected use of Ornithopters as weapons has become a source of frustration. These vehicles, intended as a resource and endgame goal, require significant resources to craft, often necessitating group efforts. Their near-indestructibility has led to players using them to ram opponents, a tactic described as “goomba stomping.”
Reddit user Bombe18 shared a clip showing repeated attacks by Ornithopters. Shooting at the vehicles proved ineffective, and attempts to evade them were futile. Joel Bylos, game director, acknowledged the problem, stating, “We have people working on fixing the goomba stomping ASAP.” The role of Ornithopters in Dune: Awakening has been debated as beta testing. While fun to build, some players feel thay diminish the importance of desert survival and trivialize travel.
Suggestions for addressing the issue range from disabling their use as weapons to restricting them to specific pvp zones. another proposal involves increasing their vulnerability to damage. One player suggested, “Seems like they should just make guns deal more damage to them. They’d think twice about doing this if their orni could get wrecked by gunfire.” Another proposed, “Make Deep Desert crashes do significant damage… Two crashes or something past a certain physics threshold should disable the vehicle.”
despite the Ornithopter issue, Dune: Awakening has had a successful launch on PC, with a near 90% positive rating on Steam based on almost 20,000 reviews. The game has seen a peak concurrent player count of nearly 150,000.
