On the 29th, local Japanese media, including NHK, reported that Ototake, who ran as an independent candidate in the by-election for the 15th House of Representatives of the Tokyo area, received 19,655 votes and ranked 5th out of 9 candidates. In this region, the opposition figure Natsumi Sakai, the candidate of the Constitutional Democratic Party, was elected for the first time. After being defeated, Ototake expressed his feelings about losing, saying, “I didn’t have enough strength,” and “I’m very grateful to those who supported me.” He added, “I’m sorry for not living up to your expectations.”

Ototake was born a disabled person with a congenital disaster, missing arms and legs. While attending Waseda University, he published ‘Five Body Dissatisfaction’, which included his experiences, and became world famous. It also ranked number 1 on the best seller list in Korea.

After graduating from college, he obtained an elementary school teacher’s license and worked as a teacher, and also served as a member of the Taoist Education Committee. Afterwards, he announced his intention to run for the Japanese House of Councilors election in 2016, but suspicions were raised that he had an affair, and it was shocking that as many as five women were involved. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party at the time tried to nominate Ototake for the House of Councilors (Parliament) election, but withdrew it after his affair scandal arose.

Ototake also issued an apology acknowledging the relationship, and news of a divorce was also reported.

Even after the controversy, Ototake’s attempt to enter politics continued. He ran as an independent candidate in the Tokyo constituency in the 2022 Japanese House of Councilors election, but lost.
