More than 1 million people in Mexico attempted to purchase tickets for a three-night concert series by the K-pop group BTS in Mexico City, which took place from May 7 to May 9, 2026. The demand for the shows at GNP Seguros Stadium was so significant that many fans who were unable to secure tickets gathered outside the venue regardless.

Diplomatic Intervention for Concert Dates

The intensity of the ticket demand led to an unusual diplomatic exchange between the leaders of Mexico and South Korea. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sent a formal letter to the president of South Korea, pleading for the addition of more concert dates to accommodate the high volume of fans.

The South Korean president responded to the request with an apology. According to reporting from AOL, the Korean president stated that she had looked into the matter, but BTS could not add further shows in Mexico due to the existing schedule of their world tour.

Visit to the National Palace

Despite the inability to add more dates, President Sheinbaum extended a high-level honor to the seven members of BTS by inviting them to the National Palace. This honor is typically reserved for visiting diplomats. The members arrived at the palace wearing well-tailored suits and sleekly coiffed hair.

The announcement of the National Palace visit was made with only five hours of advance notice. Despite the short timeframe, an estimated 50,000 fans gathered to fill the Zócalo, the central square of Mexico City, to watch the president and the pop stars wave from a balcony.

Fan Activity at GNP Seguros Stadium

The concerts were held on May 7, May 8, and May 9, 2026, at GNP Seguros Stadium. The atmosphere surrounding the venue was characterized by significant frenzy, with many fans arriving early to enjoy the music and atmosphere regardless of whether they possessed a ticket.

Some fans resorted to climbing and sitting on tree branches outside the stadium to obtain a better view of the proceedings. Others gathered in the streets to dance and sing, including a father and daughter observed dancing outside the stadium on May 7, 2026.

Market Presence in Mexico City

The scale of the reception in Mexico is reflected in digital consumption data. Mexico City is currently ranked as the number one city globally for BTS streams on Spotify, highlighting the depth of the group’s popularity within the region.
