The latest survey results show that generative AI tools have secured a firm foothold across Japanese game studios. Out of the developers surveyed by CESA, 63 percent report using generative AI on a daily basis, while 22.8 percent use the technology occasionally.
This rapid expansion highlights a significant shift from previous production cycles. According to the 2025 CESA report, developers primarily applied AI to generate images and visual assets, write narrative text and dialogue, and support basic programming tasks. The 2026 data shows that studios are now embedding these systems deeper into their core pipelines. CESA distributed the preview data to the press at the Tokyo Game Show 2026, and the full industry report is scheduled for publication in December.
Operational Benefits and Workflow Changes
Studios are adopting the technology primarily to chase efficiency gains. According to CESA, the leading benefit cited by companies is the enhancement of operational efficiency and productivity.
Management teams also expect the tools to shorten development cycles and drive down overall production and management costs. However, integrating these systems has forced studios to establish rigorous safety guards. The most common countermeasure reported by developers is the implementation of strict human verification, correction, and supervision. Additional internal policies include setting clear limitations on approved tools and explicitly barring staff from directly deploying raw AI-generated outputs without modification.

The widespread reliance on automated systems brings notable challenges regarding legal compliance and creative oversight. Tsutomu Masuda, executive director of CESA, addressed the new numbers by noting that the data confirms generative AI is being adopted widely and steadily within development environments.

He pointed out that a primary challenge for the industry moving forward will involve improving human-centric game development quality while successfully balancing technological integration and intellectual property protection.
