A crash involving an overturned tractor-trailer carrying food products on Route 55 southbound in Gloucester County, New Jersey, severely disrupted Monday morning traffic near Mantua Township, according to local officials.

The collision occurred just after 4 a.m. near the Ellis Mill Road overpass and involved the big rig and another vehicle, the Gloucester County Emergency Management Agency reported. The impact caused the tractor-trailer to overturn, blocking southbound lanes for several hours between the Glassboro and Clayton exits.

Emergency crews and hazmat responders rushed to the scene to manage a diesel fuel leak from the truck. One of the drivers involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital, according to county emergency officials.

Traffic Diverted and Lanes Blocked on Route 55

The morning commute faced significant delays as transportation officials worked to clear the wreckage. At 7:45 a.m., authorities announced that one southbound lane had reopened, though traffic remained extremely heavy in both directions near the accident site.

Drivers traveling through Gloucester County were diverted off the highway onto Ellis Mill Road earlier in the morning. Officials recommended several alternate routes to bypass the congestion, including Aura Road, Delsea Drive, Elk Road, Little Mill Road, and Route 322.

Gloucester County Hazmat assisted the local fire department at the site to contain the fuel spill and secure the damaged commercial vehicle. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing as crews work to fully clear the roadway.
