Worrying Fall in Treatment Adherence
The use of medications like Ozempic and wegovy, originally developed for diabetes, has seen a surge in demand from individuals seeking weight loss. Though,a recent survey indicates that over half of those who begin treatment discontinue it well before the recommended duration.

The Study Findings: A significant Dropout Rate
Despite their popularity, new research suggests that the manner in which these treatments are being used can be detrimental to health. A recently published Danish study analyzed data from 77,310 new users of GLP-1 medications based on semaglutide who did not have diabetes.
The research revealed a concerning trend: more than half of the participants stopped treatment within one year of starting. Specifically, around one in five discontinued use by the third month, and 42% abandoned the regimen by the ninth month.
“This level of fall is worrying becuase these medicines were not designed to be a quick and temporary solution,” stated Professor Reimar W. Thomsen from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of aarhus and the study’s lead author.
According to Professor Thomsen, early interruption significantly compromises the positive effects, as the treatment requires long-term adherence to be effective.
The Challenge of Long-Term Continuity
Previous research has consistently demonstrated that discontinuing GLP-1 medications leads to patients regaining lost weight, with most returning to their original weight within two years.
