P. Jayachandran – Celebrating 80 Years of Musical Mastery in Malayalam Film Industry

On March 3, 1944, P. Jayachandran alias Paliath Jayachandrakuttan was born in Ravipuram, Ernakulam district, to musician Tripunithura Ravivarma Kochanian Thampuran and Subhadrakkunjamma. The family later moved to Iringalakuda in Thrissur. P. Jayachandran, who was interested in Kathakali, Mridangam Chendavayana, Pooram, Pathakam and Chakyarkooth, won many awards for simple music and Mridangam playing at the school level.

His first teacher was KV Ramanathan, who was a music teacher at Iringalakuda National School when he was a student. In 1958, he won first prize for Lalitha Sangeet and Mridangam at the Yuvajanotsavam. KJ Yesudas, who later became a lyricist, became the first in classical music. As both of them excelled in the field of music, much later was seen on the picture of their performance on the Yuvajanotsava stage. After graduating from Iringalakuda Christ College in Zoology, he went to Madras with his elder brother.

In 1965, he made his debut in the world of film songs by singing the song ‘Orumullapumalaan’ composed by P Bhaskaran in the film ‘Kunjalimaraikkar’ and composed by Chidambaranath. On the recommendation of director A Vincent, who heard two songs sung by Jayachandran at a music festival held in Madras before the film’s release, Devarajan-P Bhaskaran’s song ‘Manjalayilmungithorthi’ was sung for the film ‘Kalithozhan’. With the release of this film in 1967, Jayachandran’s first hit song was born.

Jayachandran also got the epithet “Bhav Gayakan” for his beautiful singing style. “Drowning in yellow” “Like a love song..” ..” “Karimukil forest..” The songs became crucial in his career, and he sang over 15000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi languages.

He is the favorite singer of the new generation with songs like “Olanjalikuruvi” in 1983, “Sharadambaram” in Nin Moitheen, “Nhaanoru Malayali” in Jileb and “Malarvaka Kompath” in the movie “Ekhu Samam”.

He won his first National Award for Best Singer for the song “Sivasankara Sarvasaranyavibho” composed by G. Devarajan in the movie “Narayana Guru” directed by PA Bakker. P. Jayachandran received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer five times. of his contribution to Tamil film music in 1997 He was awarded Kalaimamani Award by Tamil Nadu Govt.

Apart from music, Jayachandran is also present in film acting. P. Jayachandran has acted in films and music albums like “Nakhakshatmanal” Hariharan, “Krishnaparunth” O. Ramadas directed by VK Prakash, “Trivandrum Lodge”.

Lalitha’s wife Lakshmi and Dinanath’s children are singers. Lakshmi has sung in music albums and Dinanath has sung play in two Malayalam films. Permanent residence in Chennai with his family.
