Winston-Salem Open.”/>Winston-Salem, NC – Former champion Pablo Carreno Busta launched his campaign for a second Winston-Salem Open title with a dominant performance on sunday, defeating Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-3 in just 58 minutes. The Spaniard, now 34, displayed the form that carried him to victory in 2016, dropping only eight points on his own serve and securing a decisive win to advance to the second round.
Day One delivers Compelling matches
Carreno Busta, one of four former champions in this year’s draw, will next face a challenging matchup against 10th-seeded Sebastian Baez, the 2023 champion. The Spaniard’s precision and power were on full display, winning 57% of points on Nishioka’s first serve.
The day also saw impressive performances from other contenders. Botic van de zandschulp, fresh off a stunning upset of Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 US Open, overcame a slow start to defeat Australian Adam Walton 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Dutchman relied heavily on his serve,delivering 15 aces according to Infosys ATP Stats,and will now face sixth-seeded Italian matteo Arnaldi.
Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, currently ranked No. 88,continued his strong form with a 7-6(6),6-4 victory over Nicolas Jarry,who has recently slipped to World No. 100. Majchrzak’s consistency on serve – dropping just three points - proved crucial in securing the win. He will next play Portugal’s seventh seed, Nuno Borges.
Rising Stars shine in Winston-Salem
Hamad Medjedovic, the former Next Gen ATP Finals champion, marked his debut at the Winston-salem Open with a confident victory over Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, winning 6-3, 7-6(7). Medjedovic, who broke Rinderknech’s serve once in each set, demonstrated his growing prowess on the ATP Tour.Rinderknech had recently achieved a notable upset of his own, defeating former US Open finalist Casper Ruud in Cincinnati.
Medjedovic’s reward is a second-round clash against 15th-seeded Briton Jacob Fearnley.
