Packers Release Jaire Alexander After Injury-Plagued Seasons
Updated June 9,2025
The green Bay Packers have parted ways with cornerback Jaire alexander, ending a long offseason of speculation. The decision, revealed Monday, comes after two seasons heavily impacted by injuries, despite attempts to find a compromise, making Packers fans question the team’s cornerback situation.
Packers President Mark Murphy acknowledged Alexander’s departure at a charity golf event. “He’s been a great player for us, obviously, an elite talent,” Murphy told WBAY-TV, adding, “unfortunately just injured a lot. The reality is for the last four years for Jaire, it’s about half of the games he’s been able to play.”
Alexander, a first-round pick in 2018, had two years remaining on his $84 million contract extension. His release creates over $17 million in salary cap space for green Bay. The Packers’ decision reflects concerns about his availability, as he participated in only 34 of 68 possible games since 2021.
In 2024, Alexander’s season ended prematurely due to a torn PCL, limiting him to seven games. A year earlier, shoulder and knee issues, along with a suspension, also restricted him to seven appearances.
“I know it’s been really, really frustrating for not only him as a player, but us as a club,” Packers general manager brian Gutekunst said shortly after last season. ”When you have a player who’s done what he’s done for us in the past, and then not being able to get him out on the field consistently, that’s tough.”
Gutekunst had previously expressed openness to trading Alexander, stating the team wanted to “get something back for that investment.” While a trade never materialized, the Packers did offer Alexander a revised contract recently, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
What’s next
With Alexander’s departure, the Packers will need to address their cornerback depth as they head into the upcoming season. The team will likely explore options in free agency and the draft to bolster the position.
