Padilla on Noem Clash: No Viral Moment Intent
Padilla Defends Confrontation With Noem at Los Angeles Presser
Updated June 15, 2025
Sen.Alex Padilla, D-Calif., is defending his conduct after being handcuffed and removed from a Los Angeles news conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The incident occurred days after the senator interrupted Noem’s update on federal enforcement actions related to immigration protests.
Padilla addressed the controversy during a CNN interview with Dana Bash on Sunday. He stated that his presence at the federal building was for a scheduled briefing with U.S. Northern Command representatives, who had deployed troops to the city. Learning of Noem’s press conference nearby, padilla sought to observe.
“Surprise, surprise, no substance came from that press conference, just political attacks,” Padilla said. He added that he felt compelled to question Noem after she spoke about “needing to liberate the people of Los Angeles” from their elected officials.
Padilla asserted he “needed to speak up” due to concerns about the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations. He described the situation as a “terror” for hardworking, potentially undocumented individuals.
According to Padilla, agents responded “pretty much immediately” when he attempted to ask a question. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin accused Padilla of attempting to “manufacture a viral moment,” a claim the senator denies. He maintains he was simply doing his job by questioning a Cabinet secretary.
While CNN security correspondent Josh Campbell, a former FBI agent, suggested Noem’s security acted appropriately, Padilla disagreed. He argued that his treatment as a senator raises concerns about the treatment of others without such titles.
Bash suggested that security personnel might not have recognized Padilla, despite his identifying himself as a senator. Padilla countered that he is well-known in Los angeles and questioned Noem’s awareness of California’s senator and ranking member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration.
