Common Pain Reliever Linked to Increased Risk-Taking Behavior
A common over-the-counter pain reliever, acetaminophen, may subtly alter how people perceive risk, potentially leading them to take on more chances, according to a study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.While the drug is widely used and considered essential by the World Health Organization, this research raises questions about its broader psychological effects.
The Balloon Analogy: Visualizing Risk
Researchers at Ohio State university conducted a series of experiments to explore the relationship between acetaminophen and risk-taking. One key experiment involved a simulation where participants were asked to inflate a virtual balloon. For each pump of air, participants earned virtual money, but there was a risk that the balloon would burst, causing them to lose all their accumulated earnings.
“We wanted to see if people would keep pumping the balloon, knowing that it might burst and they would lose their money,” explained lead researcher Baldwin Way. “But for those who are on acetaminophen, as the balloon gets bigger, we believe they have less anxiety and less negative emotion about how big the balloon is getting and the possibility of it bursting.”
Beyond the Balloon: Hypothetical Scenarios
In addition to the balloon simulation, participants completed surveys assessing their perceived risk in various real-world scenarios. These included hypothetical situations such as betting a day’s income on a sporting event, bungee jumping, or driving without a seatbelt.
While one survey indicated that acetaminophen consumption reduced perceived risk compared to a control group, another similar survey did not replicate this effect.
Interpreting the Findings: Anxiety and Risk
The study’s authors concluded that, on average, there appears to be a important, albeit slight, relationship between taking acetaminophen and choosing to take more risks. Though,they also acknowledged that these observed effects could be attributed to other psychological processes,such as reduced anxiety.
“It may be that as the balloon increases in size, those on placebo feel increasing amounts of anxiety about a potential burst,” the researchers explained. “When the anxiety becomes too much, they end the trial. Acetaminophen may reduce this anxiety, thus leading to greater risk taking.”

The researchers emphasized the need for further examination into the psychological mechanisms behind these findings and the biological pathways through which acetaminophen might influence decision-making.
Despite these potential impacts on risk perception, acetaminophen remains a cornerstone of pain management globally. The study underscores the importance of continued research into the effects of common over-the-counter medications on our choices and behaviors.
“We really need more research on the effects of acetaminophen and other over-the-counter drugs on the choices and risks we take,” Way stated.
