Nate Schmidt, Panthers defenseman, praised Marchand’s ability to rise to the occasion, saying, “I don’t think the moment ever gets too big for him.”
Marchand’s short-handed goal in the second period, assisted by Anton Lundell, put Florida ahead 4-3. Earlier, Dmitry kulikov had tied the game. Corey Perry’s late goal for Edmonton forced overtime, marking the sixth time in NHL history that the first two games of the Final went to overtime.
Despite the pressure of a tied game, Matthew Tkachuk described a relaxed Panthers locker room. ”We’re coming in here, we’re hooting and hollering, we’re having some fun,” he said.
Lundell again set up Marchand for the game-winning goal in the second overtime. Marchand managed to maintain control of the puck despite a hit from Evan Bouchard and slipped it past Stuart Skinner.
