A Growing Threat in Chihuahua
Chihuahua, Mexico is currently facing a significant measles outbreak, becoming a focal point for the disease in North America. As of August 13, 2025, the state reported 3,778 confirmed cases, nearly three times the total number of cases recorded across the entire United States. An additional 5,286 cases are currently listed as probable, bringing the total potential infections to over 9,000 in a population of 3.9 million. Tragically, Chihuahua is also leading in measles-related fatalities, with 13 deaths reported as of mid-August. Nationwide, Mexico has reported 1,926 measles cases across 17 states, with Chihuahua, Sonora, and Zacatecas experiencing the highest infection rates.
Aggressive Vaccination Campaign Underway
In response to the escalating outbreak, the Chihuahua state government, led by governor Maru Campos, has launched an intensified measles vaccination campaign. A remarkable 451,000 vaccinations have already been administered, with a specific focus on reaching remote and isolated communities within the Sierra Tarahumara region. This effort aims to rapidly increase immunity and prevent further spread of the highly contagious virus.
Preparing for a Safe Return to School
With the school year approaching, authorities are prioritizing the health and safety of students. The Chihuahua State Congress has emphasized the importance of guaranteeing adequate vaccination coverage before classes begin. Schools are preparing a sanitary fence
to help contain potential outbreaks, and officials are ready to address any cases that may arise. Parents and guardians are being asked to provide proof of vaccination for their children before they enter school premises. Parent associations and Section 8 SNTE are actively calling on families to ensure their children are up-to-date on their immunizations.
Hugo Gutiérrez, a key figure in education, has affirmed that preparations are complete for the start of the school year, with health protocols in place to protect students and staff.
national Context and Containment Efforts
While Chihuahua is the epicenter, the measles outbreak is a national concern.Approximately 3,500 cumulative cases and 12 deaths have been reported across Mexico. The Mexican government has declared that it has largely contained the outbreak across most of the country, but acknowledges that localized transmission continues in Chihuahua.
